The Mass Media: Has It Got A Hold On You?

We live in a society where we are surrounded by media. It is therefore hard for people to go without it. For example, I am very dependant on television, music and my cell phone. I dont neccessarily think this is a bad thing. Cell phones are always there for emergencies and music can help you cope with your emotions. Television on the other hand is not needed but when I am bored and feel I have "nothing" to do, it's always there for me. It's winter, cold and no one wants to be outside, so I pretty much hybernate and watch television instead of going outside, but can you blame me? The bad thing about being so dependant on television is that it is a great way for the media to use people. For example, commercials. They use commercials to intrigue you into buying certain products like toys, food, electronics, etc. I personally hate commercials and can't stand them and I think that leaves me to say, the media has not gotten a hold on me, but I do use it to my advantage.

  1. Another horrible thing about all this media is that not only can it be manipulative, but it's also as simple as the fact that it makes you lazy. Sitting around watching TV when you could be going out for a walk... Calculators on cell phones to make it all too easy to not to long division written on a piece of paper... I see your point about it being hard to avoid though. When the entire world revolves around it, it's hard to just not be involved.

  2. I mean, I can say I AM lazy, but it's the weather that makes people that way. No one wants to go out in -10 weather. I don't think that the media has everything to do with today's society being lazy but it does have a lot to do with it. For example, Facebook is the largest reason for people not being able to get up. People are so lazy and addicted to knowing everything about everyone they can't even do homework.

  3. I think media has also become somewhat of a scapegoat - it is so much easier to turn on the tv than to engage in conversation with our family. It is easier to text, email or facebook someone (yes, it is turning into a verb)rather than write them a letter or even pick up the phone to hear their voice. Do you see any (positive or negative...)changes in the way we personally interact because of the technology we have available to us? Like, me now commenting on your blog instead of speaking to you personally......
